Harry Browne's Journal

This Journal provides information regarding Harry Browne's life and work. Entries will be added by Harry's wife, Pamela Wolfe Browne, periodically ~ not every day. This isn't an interactive blog where you can post your thoughts. However, you can email me, and if your email seems to be of general interest, you might read a response in this Journal. Unfortunately, a personal answer can't be provided due to time constraints.

Two Years Ago:  Today is the second anniversary of Harry's passing. If the emails I've received during the past two years are any indication, I'm not alone in missing him. Thank you for your kind and thoughtful messages, your continued interest in his work, and your support. It means a great deal to me.

A New eBook: To commemorate Harry's life, I've assembled a new eBook titled, "Investment Strategy in an Uncertain World" ~ a collection of 16 articles from HARRY BROWNE'S SPECIAL REPORTS newsletter. Although the articles were written in the 1980s and 1990s, they contain timeless ideas ~ ideas that can help you today to detect sound investment advice from jargon posing as insight. And, of course, they're written in Harry's patented easy-to-follow style, sprinkled with his good humor. The new eBook will be available next Tuesday, March 4th at: www.TrendsAction.com.

A Review: As a tribute to Harry's life, Johnny Kramer wrote an article titled, "Harry Browne Lives!" that you can read today on Lew Rockwell's web site. The article is an in-depth review of RULE YOUR WORLD! Finding Freedom & Living ProfitablyYou can read the article here: www.LewRockwell.com.

Thank You Donors:  I appreciate so much the donors who contributed to Harry's CD Freedom Course project. Enough money was raised to transfer the 1967 reel-to-reel tapes to redigitalized CDs; and now the 8 lectures (taped at the Elk's Lodge in Long Beach, California; and the Stanley Full Building and the Knickerbocker Hotel in Hollywood, California) are on 20 CDs of approximately one hour each. I'm currently investigating the possibility of reducing production costs, packaging, writing ads, and promoting the project. Although I'd hoped that the freedom course would be available by Christmas, it's taking longer than anticipated to finalize the project. But rest assured, I'm working toward that end, and you'll be notified as soon as the course is available for sale.

LewRockwell.com Article:  It's been reported recently that when Ron Paul ran for president as a Libertarian that he refused federal matching funds. However, Ron Paul failed to raise enough money to qualify for federal matching funds, so he wasn't in a position to turn them down. In today's new article, "Why Harry Browne Refused Matching Funds and Why Ron Paul Should, Too" I cite Harry's reasons for refusing federal matching funds after he qualified for them in his 1996 and 2000 campaigns for the presidency ~ and I urge Ron Paul to do the same.

Harry Browne CD Freedom Course:  I have exciting news to share with you!

A few months ago I came across a box of reel-to-reel tapes in our garage ~ a lecture series Harry presented in the mid-60s entitled, "The Art of Profitable Living". After listening to a couple of tapes it occurred to me that Harry's lecture material was the precursor to How I Found Freedom in an Unfree World and that it would make a great CD course. So plans are being made to produce and market them.

I believe Harry's CD Freedom Course will make a difference in a lot of lives ~ especially the lives of folks who don't read or have little time to read. And I think folks who have read Harry's freedom book will enjoy the CDs because for the first time they'll hear him present his course material in his own voice. So be on the lookout for this product in the near future!

FMNN TV Archives:  A number of folks have contacted me recently to notify me that the TV Archive links to Harry's FMNN eTV show, "This Week in Liberty with Harry Browne", are no longer working. I contacted FMNN a couple of  weeks ago and heard back from them today. According to Craig Spitzer at FMNN: "As of now we have taken down our video server as FMNN is no longer offering any video content on the site. I have heard plans to get the server back up and running and offering some videos from FMNN, and I would assume at that time I should be able to load up the content you are linking to as well. I don't have any sort of ETA on this though. I will keep you posted as any new events occur re: getting the video server back up and running."  So please either continue to check the links periodically, or read Harry's journal updates for an announcement.

New eBook Available:  Harry's newest book, 2000+ Libertarian Quotes, is finally available as an eBook for only $9.75! You can order it now. click here.

The quotations in the collection of over two thousand pithy libertarian quotations and comments concerning liberty, government, and politics were personally selected by Harry to help you sell libertarian ideas to others. Surprisingly, none of the quotes are by Harry!

But there are quotes from conversations that he had with friends, emails from associates, letters from admirers, and listeners to his radio shows, as well as lesser known sources of particular interest to Harry such as: operettas, television shows, speeches, movies, etc. And, of course, there are quotes by famous philosophers, politicians, scholars, and other writers.

The quotations in the book are sorted by topics with their sources included, and are meant to challenge, inspire, and motivate you. Harry believed that if you're well-armed and benevolent in your approach, quotations could help you in your conversations with friends and family, in speeches, in letters to editors ~ anywhere to open minds to embrace liberty.

So why not order your eBook today. You might just discover that you've been quoted in it!

How I Found Freedom In An Unfree World:  Harry's freedom book was published in 1973 and focused on maximizing personal liberty by taking responsibility for your own life. It became an instant classic in libertarian circles. In 1997, a 25th anniversary edition was published and sold for $24.95. This book continues to be in demand and is considered a modern classic. If you've searched for a copy recently (such as on Amazon.com) you know that book dealers are offering copies for anywhere from $50 to $549.95.

How I Found Freedom In An Unfree World is available now as an online eBook. And it can be in your hands, or the hands of a friend, to read in a matter of minutes. You pay for it via credit card, and download it to your computer. Then you can read it on your computer screen - or print it out and read it in your easy chair. Each of the 330+ pages is formatted for easy reading, just like the books you buy in a bookstore. And because there aren't the normal printing and distribution costs, the price of the book is only $9.75 - a true bargain!

One year ago today: March 1st, 2006, my beloved husband, Harry Browne, passed on. It's said that time is a great healer. But I can say honestly that I miss Harry as much if not more today than I did a year ago. I miss his wise consultations. I miss his wit, warmth, love of life, compassion, gentleness, and diplomacy. I miss his optimism, playfulness, fairness, and dedication to the truth. I even miss watching him work long hours so we might live in a free country again. I miss him.

Many people have expressed to me over the past year that they miss Harry, too. And that they'd like to see photographs of him on his web site. So I put together a Photo Gallery to commemorate his life, and I'm publishing it today in his memory.

If you'd like to view photos of Harry from his childhood until his passing, please click on this link: http://www.HarryBrowne.org/PhotoGallery.htm

Thank you for your continued support and interest in Harry's work. It's very comforting to me to know that so many of you still think of Harry fondly, and that you want to continue to read his work.

January 24, 2007

Thank you:  A heartfelt "thank you" to those of you who made donations recently to keep HarryBrowne.org online. I was overwhelmed at the response to December's plea, and the generosity of the donors. And I'm very grateful for all the kind notes and letters that I received along with the contributions. I think Harry would be so pleased to know that his work is still available on the internet. So thank you again for your donations. I appreciate it more than words can express.

The Great Libertarian Offer:  As promised last month, Harry's book The Great Libertarian Offer is available now at LibertyFree.com for $9.75 along with Fail-Safe Investing and Why Government Doesn't work.

Future Online Books:  I hope within the next couple of months to complete a book of quotes and offer a fourth online previously unpublished book. So please bookmark LibertyFree.com and search for additional titles in the not-so-distant future.

December 15, 2006

Donations Needed Again:  The first six months after Harry passed on March 1, 2006, I was able to keep HarryBrowne.org online, so anyone interested in reading his articles and listening to his radio show would have access to them. Then, due to financial circumstances, I asked for donations for the last four months of this year. Fortunately, a number of you responded with contributions, so I was able to keep Harry's site up and running through the end of December, 2006.

Unfortunately, I need help again. So if you value Harry's articles, radio broadcasts, and/or any other information on his web site, I'd greatly appreciate it if you'd consider making a contribution to the site's 2007 monthly hosting fees. The current fees amount to $100/month ~ which includes sending out FreedomWire messages to keep folks informed of the availability of new or previously published works.

To make a donation, please log on to PayPal at: https://www.paypal.com/ and send your contribution to: PLWBrowne@VintageBaubles.com. Please be sure to indicate in the "Email Subject" line that your donation is for HarryBrowne.org, and include your name and email address so I can personally thank you.

If you don't have a PayPal account, and you don't wish to open one, you can send your donation in the form of a check or money order to: Pamela Wolfe Browne, 106 Oakland Avenue, Kernersville, NC  27284. Please be sure to include your return address so I can personally thank you. In either case, any amount would be greatly appreciated. And all donations will be used to keep this web site online and to promote Harry's life's work on LibertyFree.com and elsewhere.

The Great Libertarian Offer:  Before Harry passed, he hoped to offer for sale on LibertyFree.com his book, The Great Libertarian Offer. Since he was unable to do so, I'm making the book available very soon. Some say this book is one of Harry's best, and that it's probably more appropriate today than ever before. I hope if you haven't already read it (or you have friends or relatives that haven't read it) you'll log on to LibertyFree.com and purchase a copy. You can sit at your computer and read it online, or you can print it out and read it in the comfort of your easy chair. The cost is the same as Harry's other two books offered on LibertyFree.com (Fail-Safe Investing and Why Government Doesn't work) ~ only $9.75.

September 6, 2006

Thank you: I really appreciate all the donations to keep Harry's web site online. I now have the funds to cover the hosting fees through December, 2006 and the domain registration renewal fees for 2007! So a big thank you to all of you who made a contribution.

Reception Memorabilia: A number of people have asked me to describe the memorabilia that was displayed at Harry's memorial service reception. A month prior to the memorial service I went through hundreds of photos of Harry going all the way back to when he was 3 years old. I gathered together all the political photos and put them in a small photo album, and I placed all of the large professional photographs in a large scrapbook. Then I made three large framed photo collages. One collage depicted Harry's political life, a second displayed professional pictures of him by decades, and the third was a grouping of photos showing things Harry loved ~ such as playing the piano, eating, going to the symphony and opera, holding one of our cats, etc. A fourth college, made by Autumn, showed Harry's family life.

Large wrought iron book stands were used to display the collages on two conference-sized tables in the fellowship hall. Also on display were pieces of our antique Statue of Liberty china, a framed set of Statue of Liberty stamps that my mother had given Harry as a gift, a special handmade guest book for people to sign, a Statue of Liberty oil lamp, Harry's favorite framed photograph of the two of us taken on a cruise in the 1990s, a framed photograph of Harry with his arms around Autumn and me, two large Statute of Liberty's flanking a huge colorful floral arrangement made by my mother, and a large bronze urn in the shape of a book containing Harry's remains. There were also stacks of professional photographs of Harry with 80 of his ties which were given as parting gifts to those in attendance.

Photo Requests: I've had requests to share some photos of Harry. So be on the lookout in the near future for a photo gallery that I'll be creating on the web site.

Lifetime Achievement Award:  When posting the program bulletin for Harry's memorial service I neglected to mention something that might be of interest. During the reception afterward the service, Steve Dasbach and Bill Redpath presented posthumously to Harry the Libertarian National Committee 2006 Thomas Jefferson Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Libertarian Party; and I accepted the beautiful crystal pyramid-shaped award on his behalf.

Thank you: I sincerely appreciate the rapid response to my request for donations to keep Harry's web site online. It's very gratifying to know that Harry's work means so much to people. Thus far I've received enough funds to cover the hosting fees for July and August, and almost half of September. Thank you so much for your donations and your kind words about Harry and his writing. They are greatly appreciated.

Requests: I've had numerous requests the past few days to print the text of Harry's memorial service message. Below is the message Harry's daughter, Autumn, read to the congregation on August 12th:

"Setting Your Sights

As I look back over my life, I can see so many ways in which I could have done things better than I did, and I certainly wish I'd learned a lot of things sooner than I did.

And yet I have enjoyed a wonderful life. I'm married to the ideal woman. I have had the good fortune to be associated in business with highly competent, honest, compatible people. I've had a book that was #1 on the best-seller list, and others that sold well above average. I've had first-class friends in many different areas of my life. I've been able to live in three countries and enjoy the best the world has to offer. I was honored to be the Presidential candidate of the Libertarian Party.

To have made so many mistakes, and yet to have had so much. It proves that you don't have to be perfect to succeed.

When I die (if ever), I'd like the epitaph on my tombstone to read:

I didn't do everything I wanted to do,
I didn't become everything I wanted to be,
But because I aimed for the stars,
I reached the top of the world.

I don't advise being careless or sloppy. I do advise that you hold fast to your beliefs and act in the best way you know how--but then forgive yourself whenever you fail to measure up to your standards.

You will never be perfect. But you can be free and happy.

I hope you make it."

~ Harry Browne

Donations Needed: Since Harry passed on March 1st, I've been able to keep his web site online so his work would be accessible to those interested in reading his articles, and so I could keep everyone up-to-date on his memorial service and future projects. However, due to financial reasons I'm going to have to close the site unless I can raise funds to pay the site's monthly hosting and yearly domain registration fees. If you'd like to help keep HarryBrowne.org online, please log on to Paypal at: https://www.paypal.com/ and send your contribution to: PLWBrowne@VintageBaubles.com. Any amount will be greatly appreciated. And please be sure to indicate in the "Email Subject" line that your donation is for HarryBrowne.org, and include your name and email address so I can personally thank you.

Thank You: I returned home from North Carolina today and want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who attended Harry's memorial service and reception on August 12th in Kernersville, NC. It was a difficult day for me, but I appreciate your attendance more than words can express. And I'm glad we had an opportunity to celebrate Harry's life. I also want to thank those of you who sent email regrets. They were read during the reception and very much appreciated. The one-hour service and two-hour reception with spontaneous eulogies, buffet, and memorabilia were taped by Cloud 9 Videography; and the DVD's are on their way to me now.  Those who attended the reception were able to view photo albums, scrapbooks, photo collages, and other Harry Browne memorabilia that I put together especially for the reception. But for those unable to attend.....below is the program bulletin for Harry's service starting with the front cover, moving to the inside, and ending with the back cover.

Harry's Estate Auctions: Due to a couple of unexpected problems beyond the control of the professional trading assistants who are handling auctioning of Harry's personal library, it's taking longer than expected to list the collections of record albums, audio cassettes, economic and music books, sheet music, etc. However, some of his Freedom books are being offered, and the collections will be listed soon. So please keep checking the following link:  http://stores.ebay.com/sassysisterseauctions

April 25, 2006

Harry's Estate: When Harry and I lived in California in the late 1980s to early 1990s his library contained thousands of books, record albums, audio cassettes, sheet music, etc. In 1995 an auction house sold most of his library so we'd have the funds to move to Tennessee to be centrally located for the 1996 presidential campaign. Last summer, when it became obvious that Harry was permanently wheelchair bound, we downsized to a small one-level house and a large segment of the remainder of his library was given to charity. However, Harry saved about 300 books; 200 pieces of sheet music; 300 record albums; 150 audio cassettes; and several hundred CDs that were precious to him. During the next couple of weeks his collections will be sold on eBay via a professional trading assistant. Anyone in the U.S. who's interested in bidding on his collections should log on to: http://www.ebay.com/ and search for "Harry Browne", or log on to the trading assistant's auction page at: http://stores.ebay.com/sassysisterseauctions

Thank you: I want to take this opportunity to thank those of you who sent condolences to me in the form of cards, letters, emails, and blog entries. I've read most of them more than once during the past few weeks since Harry passed on; and I've been deeply touched by not only the outpouring of love for Harry, but the memories of him that you shared with me. Your correspondence means more to me than words can express. I also want to thank everyone who made a donation in Harry's memory to Downsize DC. Your contribution will help the foundation that Harry co-founded with Perry Willis to restore our American heritage of individual liberty, personal responsibility, and freedom from government ~ a heritage that meant so much to Harry.

Harry's memorial service: The Board of Elders of the Kernersville Moravian Church approved the use of their Historic Chapel and Fellowship Hall for Harry's memorial service. The service will be held on Saturday, August 12th at 2:00 PM in Kernersville, North Carolina; and both the service and reception afterwards will be open to the public. The Reverend Amis Daniel (a very close family friend who married us in 1985 in Kernersville) will be conducting the service with Michael Buss. (Michael was a minister in England for twenty years and is the husband of Harry's daughter, Autumn.) A couple of years ago Harry made a CD that he titled, "Music for the Funeral of Harry Browne". It contains two pieces that we'll hear at his service: Paul Abraham's: Victoria and her Hussar ~ "Mausi" (Herta Staal, Harry Friedauer) and Jean Sibelius': Symphony #2 ~ Finale (Colin Davis, Boston Symphony Orchestra)  There will be an opportunity during the service and afterwards in the Fellowship Hall for individuals to share their memories of Harry.

The final "Libertarian Conversation": The final broadcast of Harry's "Libertarian Conversation" on the Genesis Network aired March 11th. Jim Babka, President of Downsize DC, voluntarily hosted the show without remuneration like he'd done so many, many times during Harry's illness. Autumn, Harry's daughter, was visiting me from California at the time, so we listened together to the very touching and beautiful last memorial show. Towards the end of the broadcast Jim read the letter below that I wrote to Harry's listeners. But first, I want to thank all of Harry's friends who participated in the memorial shows. It was very moving to hear your memories and thoughts about Harry, and I appreciate the fact that you took time out of your busy schedules to pay tribute to him. I also want to thank Michael Cloud, who like Jim Babka, voluntarily hosted a couple of Harry's shows when Jim was traveling on business.

Dear Friends of Liberty:

My soul is profoundly sad since Harry passed on March 1st. But my heart is filled with gratitude for the outpouring of condolences expressed in the numerous emails, blogs, articles, cards, and letters that I've read during the past week. It's heartwarming and comforting to know that Harry influenced or enhanced so many lives through his writing, speeches, eTV shows, and radio broadcasts. Thank you for sharing your candid stories and personal comments with me and my family. These remembrances mean more than words can express, and we've been deeply touched by them.

I'd like to take this opportunity to thank Glide-Write, more specifically Margelus Burga, for supporting Harry and sponsoring his radio shows for so many years. Mr. Burga's generous support made it possible for Harry to broadcast his "Libertarian Conversation" each week, and thereby spread the Libertarian message across the country and throughout the world. This radio show meant a great deal to Harry. It was his "baby", and he remarked to me more times than I can count how much he loved hosting this show. He loved spreading his message, talking to those who called in, answering emails, and occasionally interviewing an interesting guest. Mr. Burga was the silent "angel" who made all this possible. And on behalf of Harry I'd like to personally thank him for the great contribution he made to the cause of liberty and freedom in America.

Although Harry is no longer with us, we still have the benefit of his books, articles, and archived radio and eTV shows. And, fortunately, there are additional unpublished articles and a book, "The War Racket", which he was working on when he passed. So you will undoubtedly receive word in the future announcing the availability of more of his writings.

Many people have asked me during the past week what they could do in memory of Harry -- to celebrate his life. I'd like to request that in lieu of sending cards or flowers that you consider making a donation to Downsize DC -- the foundation that Harry co-founded with Perry Willis at DownsizeDC.org. Or you can make a contribution in Harry's memory to the Korner's Folly Foundation, which supports the theater and arts, at KornersFolly.com.

Thank you again for all your comforting expressions of sympathy. And thank you for listening to Harry's "Libertarian Conversation" each week. These get togethers every Saturday night brought him a great deal of joy and satisfaction.

Best Wishes,
Pamela Lanier Wolfe Browne
